Getting ready to talk with the doctor

Write down your questions and what you have noticed about your child’s development. Bring any reports, test results and the list of medicines your child takes now.

Clinical focus

Where the nervous system meets inherited biochemistry

These conditions often arise from gene changes that affect vital enzymes, causing early neurological and developmental signs. Each area has its own diagnostic tools and care plan.

Acute metabolic disorders

Diagnosis
Newborn screening, amino & organic acids, lactate and ammonia
Care
Specialist diets, enzyme supplements, B-vitamin cofactors and therapeutic formulas

Neurodegenerative & regression disorders

Diagnosis
Whole exome sequencing (WES), brain MRI and specialised tests
Care
Seizure control, supportive interventions and long-term follow-up

Rett syndrome & differential diagnosis

Diagnosis
Neuro-motor and behavioural assessment, ruling out autism, molecular genetics
Care
Plans for communication, motor control, breathing and joint follow-up

Cerebral palsy & rehabilitation

Diagnosis
Measuring motor control, balance and sensory integration
Care
Intensive physiotherapy and individual functional rehab with specialist centres

Research

Exome sequencing in 763 Egyptian children

With researchers from Egypt’s National Research Centre, Dr. Walaa published work in Neurogenetics applying next-generation whole exome sequencing to children with developmental regression, intractable seizures and visual impairment.

  • Diagnostic algorithms separating acquired brain injury from rare genetic variants
  • Supporting earlier diagnosis for pediatricians
  • Genetic counselling that helps families plan future pregnancies
